Prescribed burn photos, Spearfish, SD, May 2011  

Thick stands of cured cattails burn very readily and this thick stand produced flame lengths of 15-20ft.	Due to the intense heat created by wildfire, strong convergence can cause rotating vortices within or near a fire. The long thin tube between the two smoke columns is one such vortex.
