T-28 Participation in the North Dakota State/Federal Weather Mod Program

Overview

The T-28 research aircraft participated in the 1987 Federal/State Cooperative Program for Weather Modification at Dickinson, ND, from June 9 - July 5, 1987. The focus of investigation was to examine the transport and dispersion of seeding materials in convective clouds.

The primary role of the T-28 was to penetrate regions of convective clouds following the dispersal of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) in lower regions of the cloud. Instrumentation on-board recorded SF6 levels, as well as collecting data on the hydrometeor spectrum from micrometer-sized cloud droplets to centimeter-sized hailstones. The standard package of instruments provided for the determination of temperature, vertical wind, electric fields, water content, etc.

The T-28 made use of a Data General Micronova computer, along with a PMS 2D-C optical probe.
