The National Weather Service maintains an augmented ASOS observing and reporting station (KRAP, WMO id number 72662) at the Rapid City Regional Airport about 10 miles east of the city. Weather data from this site are also used in synoptic reports four times each day.
In addition to the airport surface reporting site, an upper air station (KUNR, WMO id number 72662) is located in the city on the campus of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. This location serves as the National Weather Service Office, Weather Service Forecast Office, and climatic data site for western South Dakota. Upper air observations from this site are taken twice daily.
A third site (KUDX), about 25 miles east of the city at New Underwood, is the location of the NEXRAD WSR-88D weather radar. The radar site was commissioned by the National Weather Service on 3 July 1996.
The table below gives coordinate information for the three sites.
